Comment by the Russian Foreign Ministry Information and Press Department on the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter
Representatives of 50 states signed the UN Charter in San Francisco 75 years ago, on June 26, 1945. This is a key document that enshrines the fundamental principles of interstate cooperation. It has become the foundation of the postwar international order and a cornerstone of the modern system of international law.
Firm commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including the sovereign equality of states, non-intervention in internal affairs and the refraining from the threat or use of force, is indispensable for international peace and security, sustainable socioeconomic development and implementation of human rights.
Against this backdrop, the attempts by some states to revise the fundamental standards of international law underlying the UN Charter and replace them with a rules-based international order, which implies decision-making by narrow alliances in circumvention of the UN, cause serious concern.
As a founding member of this world organisation and a permanent member of its Security Council, Russia will continue opposing this approach. We urge all our responsible partners to follow suit.
